OS X Yosemite comes with a new Java installation by default. If you don’t like Java, or if you want to disable it completely, this guide will show you how. First, open the System Preferences window by clicking on the Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen and selecting System Preferences. Next, click on Java under the Applications heading. You’ll see a list of all installed Java versions along with information about how much memory they’re using and whether they’re enabled. OS X Yosemite defaults to installing version 1.8 of Java, which is the most recent version at the time of writing. If you don’t want to use Java at all, uncheck the box next to it and click on the OK button. If you do want to use Java, but don’t want any of its associated crapware installed by default, you’ll need to disable it first. To do this, open a terminal window by clicking on the Utilities icon in the top left corner of your screen and typing terminal into the search bar. When Terminal appears in your list of results, double-click on it to open it up. Next, type in sudo dpkg -i java-1_8_0-openjdk-amd64 . This command will install Oracle’s OpenJDK 8 software development kit (SDK) onto your computer. The -i flag tells dpkg that you want to install an executable file rather than a package file (.deb or .rpm). Once this command has completed successfully, type sudo dpkg -r java-1_8_0 . This command will remove all traces of Oracle’s OpenJDK 8 software from your computer. ..

It’s really sad, but Oracle started bundling crapware like the Ask “app” even for Mac OS X users now. If you’re forced to use Java, luckily they do have an option to disable this, so the next time you need to update Java you won’t be presented with a crapware ad.

If you’re a Minecraft user and you’re running Windows, the installer doesn’t require Java to be installed anymore. We’re hoping the same thing happens for OS X soon, but for now as far as we’re aware the installer requires Java. And if you’re running Windows, you can set a registry key that will prevent any crapware ads… from Java, at least.

Disabling Java’s Crapware Ads

To disable the crapware ads on OS X, just open up System Preferences.

At the very bottom of the window you should see a Java icon.

Once you click that, it will open up a separate window, and then click on the Advanced tab.

At the very bottom of the window, you can click the checkbox for the “Suppress sponsor offers when installing or updating Java” option.

It’s a pity that you have to go through these steps to prevent this nonsense.
